The Magical Crafting Club: Bridging Generations Through Creativity and Kindness

This Christmas season, The Magical Crafting Club in Bishopbriggs took creativity to a new level, fostering connections between generations and spreading holiday cheer.

Over 30 children from our after-school craft club channelled their imagination into creating thoughtful Christmas cards using recycled materials. These beautifully crafted cards weren’t just gifts—they were heartfelt messages of kindness for residents at Mavis Bank Care Home.

Our collaboration with Mavis Bank Care Home culminated in a heart warming visit, where some children, their parents, and I personally delivered the cards to the residents. Watching the children help open the cards and read the messages aloud was magical. Each card bore the child’s name and age, adding a personal touch that deeply resonated with the residents.

The Value of Intergenerational Connections

According to Kate Cairns, Home Manager at Mavis Bank, this type of interaction provides invaluable benefits for both the children and the residents. “Children learn empathy, build confidence, and gain social skills,” she shared.

The experience also fosters an understanding of different ages and perspectives, helping children appreciate the wider world around them. For the residents, the visits bring joy, improve physical and mental well-being, and encourage activity and mobility.

The care home manager described the residents’ reactions to the visit and the cards as overwhelmingly positive: “They thought the children were so kind and thoughtful, especially those residents with no families.”

Creating Joy and Community

For the children, the experience boosted their self-esteem and confidence, as they saw first hand the impact of their thoughtful gestures. For the residents, having children visit brought smiles, connection, and stimulation. Kate added, “The residents are always happy to have children in the home—it brings joy to their life and leaves them smiling after the visit.”

Why Collaboration Matters

This collaboration underscores our mission at The Magical Crafting Club: to connect, create, and care. By engaging with the local community, we hope to show how crafting can extend beyond art and into meaningful interactions that build bridges across generations. Kate reflected on the importance of such initiatives, saying, “These events foster connections across generations, support local initiatives, and promote kindness.”

We are so proud of ALL the children at our club x
